Borehole Drilling Near Me — Ghana's WRC-Licensed Contractor

Searching for a borehole drilling company, contractor, or drilling services near you in Ghana? AquaProbe is a WRC-licensed borehole drilling company covering all 16 regions — Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, Central, Eastern, Volta, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Oti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North, North East and Savannah. We survey before every drill, so you never pay to guess.

What to check before hiring any borehole drilling company near you: a valid WRC Drilling Licence (illegal to drill without one under Act 522 and L.I. 1827), a site survey before the rig arrives, an itemised written quote — not a lump sum, a written warranty of at least 2 years structural and 6 months on the pump, and a deposit-to-start payment plan rather than full payment upfront. AquaProbe meets every one of these, and we provide our WRC licence number on request.

Why contractor overseeing matters

A contractor who knows an independent expert is on site drills a very different borehole than one who operates unsupervised. The most common ways corners get cut — inflated metre counts, undersize casing, skipped borehole development, misrepresented yield tests — are almost impossible to catch after the fact without specialist equipment on site during the work itself.

This service is for anyone who has already committed to a specific contractor but wants independent verification: NGOs and donors whose governance requires independent project oversight, developers drilling multiple boreholes across a site, or anyone who previously had a borehole fail and wants to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Typically 2–4 weeks from first contact to water at your tap, including site assessment and WRC permit processing. The drilling, casing, development and pump installation itself is usually complete within 3–5 days once the rig is on site.
Not automatically. Some regions have naturally elevated iron, fluoride or salinity, and poorly sited boreholes can carry bacteria from nearby latrines. AquaProbe tests water quality on completion of every borehole and recommends treatment where needed.

Understanding boreholes in Ghana

Ghana Borehole Geology — What Determines Drilling Success in Your Region

Most borehole disappointments in Ghana trace back to one thing: nobody explained the geology before money changed hands. Here's what actually matters.

Birimian formation (Ashanti, Western, Eastern)

Covers much of southern Ghana's gold belt. Hydrogeological surveys of 2,788 boreholes in the Ashanti Region found the Birimian formation yields 30–60 litres/min with a 91% drilling success rate and an average depth of 53m — but only when the drill point is correctly sited on a weathered or fractured zone, not blindly.

Voltaian formation (Northern, Bono East, Oti)

Sandstones, mudstones and shales underlying much of central-northern Ghana. Published hydrogeology research shows Voltaian aquifers yield 6.2–8.5 m³/h on average — generally lower and less predictable than Birimian terrain, which is exactly why a pre-drill survey matters more here, not less.

Basement complex (Upper East, Upper West)

Crystalline basement rock is essentially impermeable on its own — water only exists where chemical weathering and fracturing created pathways. Research on Tolon District boreholes recorded yields ranging from 0.3 to 36.4 m³/h on the same formation, a 100x swing that has nothing to do with luck and everything to do with where exactly you drill.

Coastal sedimentary (Greater Accra, parts of Central)

Softer, more porous formations generally mean faster drilling and shallower water tables than inland basement rock — but proximity to the sea brings its own risk: saline intrusion. Coastal boreholes need a water-quality check built into the plan from day one, not as an afterthought once the water tastes wrong.

The honest takeaway: the same geological formation can swing from a 91% success rate to total failure depending on whether the borehole is sited on a weathered zone, a fracture line, or solid unweathered rock that happens to look identical from the surface. A contractor who skips the survey isn't taking a small risk with your money — they're taking a coin-flip with it.

The legal side: drilling without a permit is not a grey area

Under the Water Resources Commission Act (Act 522, 1996) and the Drilling Licence and Groundwater Development Regulations 2006 (L.I. 1827), all groundwater in Ghana is a resource vested in the state — not the landowner. Drilling without a WRC Water Drilling Licence is illegal, regardless of whether the borehole is on your own land. The WRC has publicly stated it will sanction unlicensed drilling, and only contractors listed on the WRC's published Drilling Licence Register (Categories A, B, and C, based on rig count) are legally authorised to drill.

There's also a real health angle: a 2020 study of wells and boreholes in Dodowa, Greater Accra, found that the majority of sampled boreholes were contaminated with faecal matter — almost always traceable to poor siting near pit latrines or septic systems, something a proper site survey is specifically designed to catch before drilling, not after.

Is it safe to drink?

Is Borehole Water Safe to Drink in Ghana? What the Tests Show

Some water quality issues in Ghana are completely invisible without testing. Here's what actually varies by region, and what to do about it.

🔴

Iron & manganese

Common in Ashanti, Eastern and Western regions. Water can look orange or taste metallic. An iron filter usually solves it.

🦷

Fluoride

Elevated levels in parts of Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions. Long-term exposure causes dental and skeletal fluorosis. Reverse osmosis required if high.

🌊

Salinity

Saline intrusion affects shallow coastal aquifers in Greater Accra and the Central Region coast. Reverse osmosis needed for drinking water.

🦠

Bacteria

Can occur anywhere a borehole is sited too close to a latrine or septic tank — a siting issue, not a geology one. UV steriliser or chlorination fixes it.

The real fix starts before drilling, not after: A 2020 study of boreholes in Dodowa, Greater Accra found the majority sampled were contaminated with faecal matter — almost always traceable to poor siting near latrines. A proper pre-drill site assessment checks for exactly this, and every borehole we drill is water-quality tested on completion.
