Borehole water is groundwater — water that has naturally filtered through rock and soil layers into underground geological formations called aquifers. When a borehole is correctly drilled, cased and tested, it provides a reliable, independent water supply that is naturally protected from surface contamination. When poorly sited or untested, it can carry iron, fluoride, salinity or bacterial contamination that is completely invisible without laboratory analysis.

Key fact: A 2020 study of boreholes in Dodowa, Greater Accra found the majority sampled were contaminated with faecal bacteria — almost always traceable to poor siting near pit latrines. This is a siting problem, not a geology problem, and it is preventable with a proper pre-drill survey.

Is Borehole Water Safe to Drink in Ghana?

It depends entirely on your location's geology and how the borehole was sited. In areas with hard basement rock and good siting practice, borehole water in Ghana is often excellent quality. In coastal areas, iron-heavy zones and areas where drilling was done without a survey, water quality issues are common. The only way to know is to test.

🌊 Greater Accra & Coast

Saline intrusion in shallow coastal aquifers. Also bacterial contamination from poor siting near latrines. Test for TDS, salinity and E. coli.

⛏️ Ashanti, Eastern & Western

Iron and manganese are common. Water can appear orange or taste metallic. Iron filter required in many areas.

🏜️ Northern, Upper East & West

Elevated fluoride is the major concern. Fluoride causes dental and skeletal damage with long-term exposure. Reverse osmosis required if levels are high.

Bacterial contamination is possible anywhere if the borehole is sited within contamination distance of a latrine or septic tank. Always test on completion.

Borehole Water Treatment Options

  • Iron filter — removes dissolved iron and manganese. Required in Ashanti, Eastern and Western regions.
  • UV steriliser — kills bacteria using ultraviolet light. No chemicals, no taste change.
  • Reverse osmosis (RO) — removes fluoride, salinity, nitrates and most dissolved solids. Required for high-fluoride northern areas.
