Borehole Drilling โ€” The Definitive Guide for Ghana

How borehole drilling works, what makes a borehole succeed or fail in Ghana's varied geology, what the WRC requires, and how to find a contractor you can trust.

Borehole drilling is the process of drilling a narrow vertical hole through soil and rock to reach underground water stored in an aquifer. Done correctly โ€” with a professional site survey, a licensed contractor and proper casing and development โ€” a borehole produces clean water for 20+ years. Done without a survey or by an unlicensed operator, it is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make in Ghana.

How Borehole Drilling Works

A rotary or percussion drilling rig drives a drill bit into the ground. Rock cuttings are flushed to the surface by drilling fluid. When the drill bit reaches a water-bearing zone (the aquifer), water enters the borehole. The hole is lined with PVC or steel casing to prevent collapse. The borehole is then developed (flushed) to remove fine particles and tested to measure actual yield before the pump is installed.

What Determines Success or Failure in Ghana

The single biggest factor is where you drill. Ghana sits on four main geological provinces, each behaving very differently:

  • Birimian basement rock (Ashanti, Eastern, Western) โ€” highly productive at 40โ€“65m when sited on weathered or fractured zones. A study of 2,788 boreholes here found a 91% success rate when correctly sited.
  • Voltaian sedimentary (Northern, Bono East, Oti) โ€” moderate yields, more predictable depth. Fluoride risk in some sub-areas.
  • Basement complex (Upper East, Upper West) โ€” yield swings from 0.3 to 36.4 mยณ/h on the same rock formation. Siting is critical.
  • Coastal sedimentary (Greater Accra, Central coast) โ€” shallow water tables but saline intrusion risk near the sea.

In every province, the difference between a productive borehole and a dry hole can be as little as 10 metres of horizontal distance โ€” which is why a professional site assessment is not optional.

The WRC Licence Requirement

Under the Water Resources Commission Act (Act 522, 1996) and the Drilling Licence and Groundwater Development Regulations 2006 (L.I. 1827), groundwater in Ghana belongs to the state โ€” not the landowner. Drilling without a valid WRC Water Drilling Licence is illegal regardless of land ownership. Any contractor who cannot provide a current WRC licence number should not be hired.

What Borehole Drilling Costs in Ghana

A complete domestic borehole โ€” site survey, drilling, casing, pump, storage tank and water quality test โ€” costs GHโ‚ต12,000โ€“GHโ‚ต28,000 depending on depth and location. See our full itemised cost guide: Borehole drilling prices in Ghana 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep does borehole drilling go in Ghana?
Between 25 and 80+ metres depending on your region's geology. Coastal areas are typically shallower (30โ€“50m); hard rock zones like Ashanti require 50โ€“80m or more. A site assessment gives you a predicted depth range before drilling begins.
How long does borehole drilling take?
Drilling itself takes 1โ€“3 days on site. Add 1โ€“2 days for development, testing and pump installation. Allow 2โ€“4 weeks total from first contact to water-on-tap including site survey and WRC permit.
What is the success rate of borehole drilling in Ghana?
With a professional site survey, AquaProbe achieves a 94% first-drill success rate. Without a survey, success rates across the industry drop sharply โ€” particularly in hard rock zones where the difference between a productive aquifer and dry rock can be just 10 metres horizontally.
Can I drill a borehole without a permit in Ghana?
No โ€” it is illegal under Act 522 (1996) and L.I. 1827. The WRC has stated it will sanction unlicensed drilling. AquaProbe applies for the WRC permit on your behalf as part of every project.
