Borehole Water Quality in Ghana: What the Tests Actually Show

Borehole water is not automatically safe to drink. Here is what the tests measure, which parameters are most important in each region of Ghana, and what to do with the results.

Borehole water quality testing measures the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of your water. In Ghana, it matters โ€” because some ground conditions create contamination risks that are completely invisible, tasteless and odourless. A 2020 study of boreholes in Dodowa, Greater Accra found the majority sampled were contaminated with faecal matter. None of those borehole owners knew without testing.

Ghana's National Water Policy confirms: Elevated iron and fluoride in Western, Northern and Upper East regions. Saline intrusion in coastal Greater Accra and Central Region. Bacterial contamination anywhere boreholes are sited near latrines or septic systems โ€” which is a siting issue, not a geological one, and preventable with a proper pre-drill survey.
